We had the pleasure of tasting and drinking a 2005 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Magnum last night. This was after double decanting the wine and leaving it overnight.

The wine continued to show a strong ruby red color with some brix developing while the bouquet had elements of charred…

A very rich aged wine we drank recently was a 2004 Rusden Black Guts from Barossa, Australia which I’m sure says it all. This wine has again benefited from about 10 years aging.

In the glass it was a very dense opaque purple color with some oxidation showing at the edges, which is to be expected. It’s one of those rare occasions when we open a bottle from one of Napa Valley’s and the USA’s best wineries. Tonight is that time for Hundred Acre and its 2009 Precious. Some would say it’s way too early to drink, but this gives us a chance to savour this wine early in its development.

It’s important to remember while this wine was scored 95-97 by Robert Parker, ultimately we all have our own palates and our personal taste will win out.

Last weekend after a busy spring day we had some friends around and opened a magnum of 2006 Standish Relic, which had about 8 years to mature. This wine had been sourced during one of our trips to the Barossa, Australia and to Dan Standish’s farmhouse winery.

It was a great wine to drink with friends displaying a strong bouquet of blackberry, well balanced with good fruit presence, traditional Shiraz spiciness and a long finish…
